Beaver Bay Trailhead Development
Background and Purpose
The Beaver Bay Trailhead is a unique opportunity for the City of Beaver Bay and Lake County to develop a true community asset and regional attraction. The trailhead will be located at the corner of Hwy. 61 and County Road 4 and will serve as an anchor for the Gitchi-Gami State Trail.

LHB, Inc. is under contract with Lake County to produce engineering designs which will address parking improvements, pavement and erosion control to the now-gravel parking lot, and include visitor amenities such as a restroom facility, drinking water, landscaping, picnic tables and benches, an overlook to the Beaver River, and structure and location of interpretive kiosks. The project will also address improvements to the entrance and parking lot of the Bay Area Historical Society building across the street and road improvements to County Road 4 and bridge over the Beaver River to accommodate the new extension of the Gitchi Gami State Trail.

Lake County is the sponsor for Enhancement funds to construct the Beaver Bay Trailhead Center in Fiscal Year 2014. As owner of the property, the City of Beaver Bay will be responsible for the maintenance of the site. Coordination with local government, citizens, organizations, and private property owners will are an important element in developing a trailhead site. Representatives from the Gitchi-Gami Trail Association and the Mn/DNR Parks and Trails will help to provide feedback in order to ensure that all users are accommodated in this facility. All design elements will be per ADA requirements.

ARDC staffs the North Shore Scenic Drive Council, which was instrumental in organizing the various entities and individuals for the initial development and approval of this Trailhead Center proposal.
