Lake County CWPP 2010 Update
Project Overview
In 2006, Lake County completed its first Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). It is recommended that CWPPs be regularly reviewed and updated every several years. The Lake County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security seeks an update of their CWPP in 2010.

Between July – December 2010 the Regional Planning Division of ARDC will work with the Lake County CWPP committee to update a portion of the CWPP. The update of the CWPP will specifically address identification and prioritization of mitigation action strategies, implementation schedule/matrix and additional content updates as identified (e.g., minor WUI content updates and assistance with map development).

Lake County property owners, local government, fire responders and other stakeholders are strongly encouraged to attended one of three upcoming meetings in your area to provide important local feedback on the draft mitigation action update of the Lake County CWPP.

All Meetings are from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Monday, August 16th TWO HARBORS (Fire Hall - 401 20th Ave)

Tuesday, August 17th FALL LAKE (Town Hall - 385 Kawishiwi Trail)

Wednesday, August 18th FINLAND (Fire Hall - 6656 Hwy.1)

Public feedback will help to develop special mitigation action projects for high-risk wildfire communities under consideration by Lake County, U.S. Forest Service, and Minnesota DNR such as development of a NOAA emergency radio program, metal roof grant program, education programs, hazardous fuel reduction treatments, and installation of dry hydrants & water storage tanks to improve fire responders’ capacity to fight wildfire in remote areas. A presentation will be provided followed by discussion for public input.

CWPP Prevention Goals, Strategies and Objectives

PREVENTION GOALS:
The Lake County CWPP mitigation plan is based on four main goals:

1.Reduce human-caused wildfires throughout Lake County.

2.Provide continuing fire-prevention and education programs.

3.Work with communities to coordinate Firewise activities within the County.

4.Foster interagency, local government, and interdisciplinary cooperation when identifying, developing, and addressing hazardous fuels mitigation measures.

PREVENTION STRATEGIES:
To accomplish prevention goals, a combination of strategies will be used. These strategies include education, engineering, and enforcement. A brief description of each strategy is:

Education: Activities aimed at changing people’s behavior by awareness and knowledge.

Engineering: Activities designed to shield an ignition source (ex. Spark arrestor) or remove the fuel which may ignite from a spark or fire brand (ex. Defensible space around a home)

Enforcement: Activities used to gain compliance with fire regulations and ordinances.

IMPLEMENTATION OBJECTIVES:
Click here for a list of objectives slated to implement for each of the strategies.
