View Deer River SRTS Plan DocumentThe purpose of the Deer River Safe Routes to School (SRTS) plan is to identify barriers and unsafe conditions for children walking and biking to school in Deer River. The SRTS program is designed to work with school staff, students, and parents to evaluate the school’s surrounding, educate on the SRTS concept, enforce safety-related policies, and encourage participation. These key areas of education, enforcement, encouragement, engineering and evaluation help create a community where students can travel to school on their own and parents and school staff feel comfortable about their safety. The planning process begins with an assessment of the existing conditions around the schools in Deer River, and the distribution of a parent and student survey to determine current travel routine and safety concerns. Issues and assets are then identified and work can begin to develop goals and action steps using the key approach areas. The education approach includes imparting safety skills, creating awareness, including parents, neighbors and other drivers, and fosters life-long habits. The enforcement appoach includes increasing awareness for pedestrians and bicyclists, working to improve driver behavior, and helping children follow traffic rules. Encouragement is helps to initiate SRTS programs, increases popularity, and emphasized fun. The chosen action steps from each approach area are then documented in a SRTS Plan and implemented as part of a SRTS program. Safe Routes to School programs generally include:
