Northeast Minnesota Economic Development District

2012 CEDS Committee Winter Meeting Powerpoint !

ARDC is the recognized planning organization for the Federally designated Northeast Minnesota Economic Development District (NEMEDD). ARDC receives a planning grant to maintain the Northeast Minnesota Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS), identify EDA eligible projects, and assist communities seeking EDA funding. When conducting economic development activities ARDC uses the acronym NEMEDD.

NEMEDD's service area is ARDC's seven county region of Atikin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis.

Northeastern Minnesota Mining Cluster Awarded Grant
Minnesota's Mining Cluster received a Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge Grant of more than $1.9 million. The Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge Grant is a program of the United States Economic Development Administration (EDA), Employment and Training Administration, and Small Business Administration. The Northeast Minnesota grant is one of only 20 made nationwide and is the largest such grant in the EDA Chicago Region. In its role as the Northeast Minnesota Economic Development District, ARDC assisted with the writing and submission of the application. The grant helps fulfill goals set by the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Committee in June to focus on innovation and connect entrepreneurs and small businesses with the major economic clusters in the region.

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS)
The CEDS is developed to set NEMEDD's vision for economic development and maintain the region's federal designation as an Economic Development District (EDD). Designation as an EDD allows communities in the region to be eligible for funding opportunities through the Economic Development Administration (EDA), an agency of the United States Department of Commerce.

The CEDS Strategy Committee recommended aoption of the CEDS on June 03, 2010. The EDD Governing Board adopted the CEDS on June 17, 2010.

CEDS Strategy Committee
The Strategy Committee is responsible for development, modification, and implementation of the CEDS. The EDA sets membership requirements for the Strategy Committee. The Strategy Committee must represent the main economic interests of the region and must include private sector representatives as a majority of its membership. In addition, the Strategy Committee should include public officials, community leaders, and representatives of workforce development boards, institutions of higher education, minority and labor groups, and private individuals. View the current membership here: 2010 CEDS Strategy Committee.

The Strategy Committee holds a winter and summer meeting.
