Laurentian GIS Collaborative
The Laurentian GIS Collaborative was formed to create low cost solutions for communities to quickly design maps and analyze data. The project is progressing on schedule for the seven pilot communities; Babbitt, Biwabik, Chisholm, Eveleth, Keewatin, Mountain Iron, and Nashwauk. In the first meeting that occurred on December 10th, 2007, ARDC’s consultant, Community GIS had demonstrated their design ideas. Since then, they have met with each community and created a common set of data layers which are roads, railroads, lakes, streams, city boundaries, parcels, zoning and aerial photography. The ongoing process of collecting and creating data will continue throughout the project. To host the data and the online mapping applications, ARDC has purchased and installed a new server. A web page with a link to each community’s interface will be in place for easy access. Each application will allow the user to select and display map layer data, buffer features based upon a distance, zoom and pan, print, and perform various searches. At the upcoming meeting on April 2nd, we will take a look at some of the interfaces to see how they are developing. ARDC will facilitate a discussion and document attendees’ comments on the interface application and the data layers that have been chosen. For more information email Kara J. Kent. |
