St. Louis River Trail Extension
Background
In June 2005, ARDC completed the St. Louis River Trail Plan which outlined the general alignment for a trail connection between the City of Cloquet and the Willard Munger State Trail. The plan also described opportunities for trailhead facilities, interpretive sites, and recreational amenities. During fall 2009, Phase I of the St. Louis River Trail was constructed from the Willard Munger State Trail to the Scanlon Park and Ride lot, courtesy of funding through the Federal Transportation Enhancements Program.

Recently, the Northeast Carlton County Bicycle Routes Plan was completed, recommending the extension of the trail from the Park and Ride lot to Cloquet. In February 2015, Scanlon was awarded Transportation Alternatives (TA) funds for a 0.5 mile extension of the trail though the City's commercial district. Now that funds for construction have been awarded, design work is set to begin.

ARDC will bring together the Communities of Scanlon and Cloquet, and partners including Carlton County, Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT), Cloquet Area Chamber of Commerce, Minnesota Power, SAPPI Paper, and the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) to collaborate on a design project that will perform an in-depth examination of the surrounding area and develop a plan that will recommend a preferred St. Louis River Trail route for extension north and the necessary implementation strategies. The design work will be completed with the assistance of Landscape Architect Carlos Fernandez, who will generate schematics and drawings depicting the proposed connection ideas.
